While all poker variations each have a unique set of rules, there are some general poker rules that ring true for every poker game. Learn the basics of poker here, so you will have an essential understanding of poker rules in general.

A standard game of poker is played with a 52-card deck, though some games use more than one deck and may sometimes include jokers. Jokers are sometimes used as wild cards, as are other cards (as in Deuces Wild), that can be used in place of any card of rank and suit needed to win a hand. The cards, ranking high to low, are Ace, K, Q, J, and 10-2. While an Ace is usually a high ranking card, it can also rank low, particularly in Hi/Lo games like Omaha Hi/Lo and Stud Hi/Lo. The four suits, spades, clubs, diamonds, and hearts, are all ranked equally. In terms of general poker rules, all poker hands include five cards and a winning hand is the hand of the best five cards. Alternatively, some poker games are won with the best low five card hand, also like in

The basics of betting

General poker rules state that betting can start off with an ante, and/or a bring in or a blind. Antes do not contribute to the pot, as do blinds and bring ins. Blinds and bring in requirements are made to stimulate action within a game. Blinds and antes, in general, establish a stake in the pot. If players have no stakes in the pot, they would simply fold until they are dealt a good hand. When players have money in the pot, they are more likely to go in with a less-than-great hand, or even bluff, just to protect their blinds.

General poker rules also outline that a betting round provides players with three choices. To call is to match the bet in the pot. To raise is to match the bet in the pot and raise the amount of the bet. To fold is to withdraw from a hand, relinquishing any holdings in the pot. Players who have already contributed a wager to the pot in the form of a big blind, for instance, may check if the pot has not been raised. Since a player in the position of big blind has already contributed to the pot at a maximum bet level and if he has not been raised, he can see the next card, essentially for free, without having to bet more, even if he plans on folding.

In general, poker rules state that after betting, players typically reveal their hands, unless they muck their hand. To muck a hand means to forfeit the pot without showing the hand. This is the showdown in which the highest ranking hand wins the entire pot. If two hands are equal in rank, the pot is split equally between the two players. In Hi/Lo Poker a pot can also be quartered.
